This could be crazy

I am considering some things lately. Here are a few of them:

1. Buying used for one year. Clothes, shoes, etc. The only thing I may buy new if needed is bike parts...I use it too much to risk.

2. Selling my car. From there I will either a)not get one or b) get a really cheap one for emergencies.

3. Learning to play an instrument. I am thinking acoustic guitar because I can't fit not afford a piano. I have been wanting to do this for a long, long time and I think now may be the time.

4. Making it a point to write as much as possible. I have gotten better at this, although this blog may seem to prove otherwise. However, I have been writing in a journal more and enjoying the act of putting pencil to paper. So much so that I want to write even when i don't want to write.

I think that is enough for now. Too much probably. These are the ideas that are rolling around in this tiny head of mine (seriously, have you looked at my head lately...it is really small. Like, childrens helmet and ski goggles small!).

Sweet Potato Pie and shut my mouth

I think that's how it goes...

This weekend at Pepper place, I spied some beautiful, HUGE sweet potatoes. I have been getting them in my veggie box for about a month now. A girl can only eat so much candied sweet potatoes, so today I am giving you my new favorite sweet potato recipe:

Sweet Potato Pecan Risotto

(from Southernfood.about.com)

I served this as a main dish with a side of green beans, but would also make a great side dish to pork or a juicy steak. Need big flavor to pair with this one.

INGREDIENTS:

* 4 tablespoons butter
* 2 tablespoons minced shallots (I used spring onions)
* 1 medium sweet potato, cut in small dice, about 8 ounces or 2 cups
* 1/3 cup chopped pecans
* 2 to 3 cups vegetable broth ( I used homemade...always better)
* 1 cup Arborio rice (about 6 to 7 ounces)
* salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
* 1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
* 1 tablespoon finely chopped green onion tops or fresh parsley

PREPARATION:
Heat 3 cups of vegetable broth to the boiling point; reduce heat to the lowest setting to keep hot.

In a medium saucepan, melt butter; add minced shallot and pecans; cook until shallot is tender. Add rice and cook, stirring, until well blended. Stir in sweet potato. Stir about 3/4 cup of the hot broth into the rice mixture.

Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until liquid is absorbed. Continue adding liquid, about 1/4 to 1/3 cup at a time, stirring frequently, until the rice and sweet potato are tender (not overly soft). The texture should be creamy a little loose. This will take about 25 minutes and about 2 to 3 cups of broth. Stir in Parmesan cheese and green onion or parsley, then taste and add salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Serves 3 to 4.

Delicious. As it is Risotto, it is a little labor intensive, but well worth it. I always think of sweet potatoes as a fall food, but this makes it taste perfectly springlike.

Bon Appetit!

It's gonna start today, My Life of Saturdays

Yesterday, a friend and I took an hour drive to West Blocton to see the Cahaba Lily. I had heard of this elusive flowers and, as a part of my quest to See and Do Alabama, decided to take a trip to see it.

What is the Cahaba Lily?

Hymenocallis coronaria (Cahaba Lily or Shoals spider-lily) is a species of the genus Hymenocallis, native to the Southeastern United States. It is an aquatic, perennial flowering plant found only in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Within Alabama it is known as the Cahaba Lily, outside of that state it is known as the Shoals spider-lily due to the fact that it requires a swift, shallow, water current and direct sunlight to flourish.[1] The plant grows to about 3 feet (0.9 m) tall and develops from a bulb that lodges in between rocks in the shoals.[2] It blooms from early May to late June. Each fragrant flower blooms for one day.[1]
from Wikipedia

Well, after taking the Mini along a dirt and gravel road (boy, did we get some looks!), we parked, got out the camera bag, water bottles and headed out.

The first glimpse of 'the largest single stand of Lilies in the world". It was quite a sight, these dainty white flowers seemingly rising from the water in a dazzling display of green and white. Unable to get a good view, we kept going along the road. Some ways down, we came upon an empty shore area. After walking through the trees a bit, we found a big rock that afforded us a good view. Unsatisfied, we decided that we must get right up to them.

So, we went swimming. At first we just waded a bit out. They we needed the cameras, so I waded back, retrieved them and (after putting them in a Ziploc bag), waded back out with them held high over my head. Thank goodness I bought the accidental insurance. It was such a sight! I took some great shots, retired the camera to a HUGE boulder in the middle, and Jenn and I swam all over the place. We explored a cave, swam right up to the lilies that everyone is enchanted with. We used some rocks covered in algea as a water slide (it worked and was so fun!). We laughed a lot and splashed around for 3 hours! Everyone on the shores was watching 'those two crazy girls who are crossing the river and swimming in the lilies'!

hours later, exhausted and feet bleeding (damn snails...I am investing in chacos this week), we left. Stomachs growling, we stopped at The American Diner, where we were the only patrons and the cook made the best cornbread I have ever had (even going back to make me more!). It was delightful and the unsweet tea made me realize why people love tea in the south. Full and happy, we headed back to the city we call home.

All in all, a wonderful day. I highly recommend going to see the Lilies if you can. And splashing in the river. I hope to take a canoe trip there soon. After some editing fun, I may post more photos.

24 hour Elisa may cause nausea

Many of you have been asking me about yesterday and sending your love and support. Thank you so much, friends. I feel that an update is wanted, but, alas, is not coming. It is not that I don't want to share my day, it's just that I am a little sick of me. This blog is becoming a bit too Elisa-centric. I know, I know, what the hell did I start a blog for? That is a very good question. All I know is that right now I want a break from myself and the constant introspection and explanation and whatnot.

I will however, tell of one highlight of the day, which was more restful and also more sad than I anticipated.

After work, I went for a bike ride. A little exercise, some nature; it seemed perfect. And it was. I went along Jemison trail and was moving right along, ducking trees and smelling the honeysuckle and remembering happy things about the last year of my life. About a 1/3 of the way, I had the option to go 'off road' and take a side trail. so I did...and promptly laid my bike down. Not just a little fall, either. A major 'sliding along the dirt and sticks with your bike on top of you for at least 5 feet' affair. I just laid there, stunned for a minute before surveying the damage. All limbs were fine, bike seemed to be in one piece. However, I had gravel firmly planted in both of my palms and one entire leg was scraped (even under my pants) and my ankle and knee were throbbing. What did I do? Laugh. my ass off. I just laid there laughing. and shaking a bit.
I was only 1/3 in and I really wanted to continue my ride, so I cleaned out my hand cuts with my water and shirt, dusted myself off, made some minor adjustments to the bike...and kept on going. A bit down the trail a little girl saw me and started crying "Daddy, that girl is bleeding! Why?!". I looked down to see that I did, in fact, have blood running down my arm and leg. Oh well, such is life. I trudged on, and still enjoyed myself immensely. I was proud of my fall (I have been waiting for it to happen since I got the bike) and I felt a little like a bad-ass (you know how I love that!). I even went much further along the path than normal, carrying my ride across the stream again (stopping to again clean off the wounds).

The whole time I was doing it I thought "Scott would love this." He never made me feel silly for doing crazy things and when I told him that I felt brave, instead of rolling his eyes or making a little comment, he would look at me and say "you are brave".
Scott, my bloody bad ass ride was for you.

Coming soon: musings on Alabama vegetables and what the hell to do with Turnip greens that come dirty from the ground with roots attached!

Weekend Round-up part deux

ok, the real one.

This weekend started Thursday after work, when C.J and I loaded the car and took off to New Orleans. 6 hours later we pulled up to...a resort. We stayed with Joni, a woman who has known me since the day I was born. A woman who thinks I am wonderful and always, always spoils me. Her house was like a resort. Seriously. 3 full walls of windows looking out on to a courtyard with an outdoor kitchen, 8 person table, couch and lagoon pool. Beautiful. Picture below. Visited a bit and went to bed.

Friday-up early and had coffee outdoors (because why would you be anywhere else). Then, on to Jazz Fest. Too many happenings to mention, but I here are the highlights-
I ate my weight in Cajun food. Spicy brown crawfish etouffe, creamy pink crawfish monica, Hot andouille, pheasant and quail gumbo. With beer. The day was a bit overcast and windy, so it was pleasantly warm and humid. We heard Papa Grows Funk and Art Neville, bobbing our heads and occasionally reading. Well, actually I occasionally read. C.J voraciously read. the entire time. We looked like the odd couple! The day was going well and shaping up to be a goody...and then Stevie Wonder took the stage. After an hours worth of political nonsense (he actually asked the crowd to chant Ba-rak O-Bam-A for about 10 minutes) and Love the world ballads, I was starting to get nervous. Then it happened. The first 2 notes of Signed, Sealed, Delivered came on, the skies let loose and the fun began! For the next 45 minutes, I danced so hard in the pouring rain, mud slinging, head thrown back, skirt muddy and soaking wet. I looked around and saw 100,000+ people doing this exact same thing. It was the epitome of Jazz Fest; the wettest, muddiest, funnest dance party of my life!
I would also like to note that during this dance party, C.J had her book under her poncho and continued to read. Even after drunk grey-ponytail dirty hippie lady pestered her and then took her picture. She finally conceded when they were physically trying to pull her from her chair and I was getting hot and red in the face. It was awesome (the reading, not the drunk hippie Oldie Hawn).
Then we got stuck in traffic and a bit lost, but who cares!

Saturday-slept late. really late. then had pancakes and coffee outside again, and read on the veranda for a while. Lovely. Finally decided to trek it back out there. We arrived to a foot of mud in every direction. Luckily, we were prepared and tromped on through it. It was hot. So hot that you are sure that your skin is going to slide off. Combine this with the mud and it smelled like a farm ( I told this to a friend who exclaimed "Oh you love farms!"). Despite the sun and mud,the fun continued. On the menu: soft shell crab po-boys (the best po boy I have ever tasted), crawfish rice and a crawfish puff, a tart like situation filled with rice, crawfish and roux. I would almost kill someone for another po-boy as good as that one. We hung out and heard The Subdudes and Jimmy Buffet. I have been to a lot of Jazz fests (about 12), but I have never seen a crowd quite like the Parrotheads. Most crowds are hippie like and chill. This one was redneck and loud! Like a beach party in the middle of the bayou. I loved it. It also resembled a 400,000+ karaoke bar at times!

Sunday, we had a leisurely morning again, getting ready to drive home. C.J went to meet an friend for lunch and I decided to swim...naked. That's right folks, I went skinny dipping. The house was empty, the pool was private and I went for it. It was wonderful. I love to skinny dip, and in the warm sun, it is amazing. Then I laid out (with no tan lines!). That very well may have been one of my favorite things about the trip (right behind rain dancing). Everyone should skinny dip as often as they feasibly can. Seriously.

Then we drove home and listened to The Beatles for the entire 6 hour drive and were silly and tired and goofy.

A welcomed weekend. This week, as many of you know, is not shaping up to be very happy, so I am not sure when I will write next. Thank you for all of your kind and encouraging emails and words.

I told someone today that New Orleans is my favorite city that I never want to live in. Yep. I hope to continue to go to Jazz Fest every year, no matter where I live.

Have a good week. Below is the pool where I swam. Don't you just want to jump in? I do.

Not so usual

Not too much to write currently. Times are hard right now. Scott's birthday is next Tuesday, and next Saturday is the day I was supposed to be married. I am trying to wrap my head around the fact that this is actually my life. I find that I am better at choosing safety, but sometimes safety seems boring. Something to get used to, I guess. To learn and practice.

Things are quiet in my life and subdued. I am looking forward to Jazz Fest this weekend. A few days of sun and music (Stevie Wonder!) and beer and amazing food certainly can't hurt right now. oh, and dresses. Light, cotton dresses.

This post may sound hopeless, but I'm not. I know that one day this will be redeemed and soon enough the laughter will come easily. Just not today.

sucks.

My garden is growing like crazy though. That is fun to watch and be a part of. I also get to go to a Birthday Celebration for a friend tonight. Happy Birthday Charlotte!

ciao friends

Weekend round-up

This weekend was relatively quiet. Nothing particulary bad ass, just my normal badassiness.
Friday-After work I did nothing. At all. I came home, started some laundry, sat on the couch...and fell asleep. I woke up at 9:30, putzed around, read a bit...and went back to sleep.
Saturday was a bit more exciting. Went to Urban Standard. I love it there, but don't go much because it is farther away than many other coffee shops and with the price of gas...you get the drift. Those of you who will in suburbia will say that it is not too far away (as it is only 10 minutes), but there are about 5 coffee shops on my way, so I prefer to stay closer to home. ANYWAY, I wrote a little bit and talked a little bit (and maybe flirted a little bit), and left. Went to my friend Natalie's to meet with her mother in law for a holistic healing diagnosis. It was so interesting and helpful. I have a package of supplements coming tomorrow. Roll your eyes if you like, but I believe wholeheartedly in holistic medicine and healing. It was also nice to see the home that Natalie and Allan have made. they are so cool.
I then raced home to get ready for a party for a 1 year olds birthday, sat on the couch...and fell asleep. I woke up 30 minutes late and sad, so I didn't go. Just wasn't in the frame of mind emotionally to be around happy, beautiful people. Maybe I should have gone, but i didn't. Sorry Treads. Then went to BAM at Brookwood to read magazines and hang out.
Sunday I woke up early and my Dad and his wife came for Brunch. I fixed a wonderful recipe from Apples for Jam. White risotto with fried eggs. Side of fresh Asparagus and thick bacon. It was delicious and the visit was nice. My Dad and I have had a tenuous relationship for some time now. However, this time things were different. He was gentler and seemed happy. Less angry and impulsive. He told me that he volunteers at his church's breadbasket (the Church thing was shocking enough!), and he and June play scrabble for fun. It seems that after 50 years he decided to grow up. Good for him. Good for me. Good for our relationship. Took another nap (I slept A LOT this weekend) and then went to church. Again.
And you know what, I wasn't angry. I wasn't scared. It felt good. The sermon was wonderful. I saw people who had hurt me and felt no anger toward them, just sadness. Not weeping sadness, but a sadness that we are all sinners stuck here for while, trying to muddle through and not damage each other too much.
Then cooked a yummy dinner, wrote a bit, paid bills (thank goodness for the IRS and my bonus) and went to bed.
Another weekend down. No trauma. A success.

Next weekend: A crawfish boil, Old 280 boogie in Waverly and the Botanical Gardens Earth Day Celebration...stay tuned

I can't go back to Jersey

You know one of my favorite things about Spring? Listening to G Love with or without Special Sauce). it is so happy, so dirty (meaning: Slang rasping, reedy, rough, etc. in tone-from Yourdictionary.com).

How can anyone listen to Cold Beverages and not smile? And then go crack open a cold beer? The line "Watermelons like a drink, please fix me a cold slice"...that IS summer to me. Ever since I heard Girl at the Laundromat, I have looked at doing my laundry in a new way...

Old stuff or new, you really can't go wrong. My personal favorite albums are Oh Yeah, Philadelphonic and Lemonade. Love it. Love the down and dirty, philly blues sound of it. Love the guitar with the harp. Everything. Go check it out.

I will leave you with a video with G love and Tristan Prettyman (also a fav). Beautiful. Peanut Butta' Jelly, butta' Butta'!

AND the video for Hot Cookin'
Enjoy!

And G singing Missin' my baby...another favorite of mine. This video really captures G Love's essence (in my humble opinion)

Little Darlin' it seems the snow is slowly melting

Pictures from Easter!
Some were taken by me, some by family...some even by my 5 year old brother. There are many, many more, but these capture the day pretty well. Enjoy.

Listen when all of this around us'll fall over, I tell you what we're gonna do

Ok, this is going to be a rant. I am SO MAD! Please excuse the rampant use of ‘adult words’.
Is God fucking with me? Seriously. Today I finally got my car back from a week long service visit. It is still busted. As I was realizing this on the way to drop off the car I borrowed, I was pulled over. Now I am out the money for the crap job on my car, AND a ticket. Oh and did I mention…my license is suspended for a ticket that I paid over the phone but did not go through. So now I have to pay exhorbitant fees for that in addition to the ticket (also bogus…I did NOT coast through the stop sign…at least he didn’t arrest me for the suspended license) in addition to the car repairs that still need to be done.

I can handle the big stuff. But this little shit is killing me. Car stuff, termites, moving, leaky toilets, job chaos…It feels so overwhelming. I am supposed to trust God? WHAT? Show up and I will. Throw me an effing bone here. I am not asking for an entire life change…how about a month where I can feel some rest? A fucking respite.

If my belief was in my hands, I would be out of the game. I am sick of this, and so tired.

I am glad it is sunny out, even though I have no windows to see it with! I can feel
it.

UPDATE: came home to Termite Carpeting. Then, an hour later the toilet started overflowing. A trip to Western later and still overflowing...called the landlord and still waiting for the 'emergency line' to call us back at Midnight.
I may or may not have gone #1 outside...I have a secluded backyard area with a huge bush blocking things...
Pictures below.

The good thing is that my sister is with me, so we laughed SO hard. Literally crying. I am so thankful she was here to help me deal with things and laugh at ourselves. I love you Ash!!

Weekend round-up

This weekend round-up is belated due to exhaustion. I was too tired from the very weekend I was attempting to write about. After 2 rambling, incoherent attempts (I know, I know...how is that different from every other post? it was, somehow), I gave up and decided to wait until I had an ounce of energy. So, here we go.

Friday I eagerly anticipated the arrival of family. Unfortunately, their 12 hour drive had snowstorms, car accidents (not theirs) and traffic, so I did not get to see them. However, I spent the evening grocery shopping, cleaning out bookshelves...I got rid of over 40(!) and worrying about the impending holiday...the one where I had decided to have 9 people to my tiny apartment for Easter supper.

Saturday was re-no day. My mom and I painted my bedroom (2 coats) and arranged furniture. This took all. day. Carrie and her mom stopped by for the mom's to meet. My mom cried when she saw Carrie and thanked her for taking good care of me after Scott's death. It was a touching moment. An unexpected trip to the paint shop (no-VOC paint is wonderful, I used Harmony by Sherwin Williams and there no fumes at all...however, it takes a bit more paint than the normal, chemical filled kind. Just so you know )and a lunch at O'Carrs, and then just 1 more hour of painting and we were done! Then I relaxed by going to V.I.P night at the new restaurant in town, Fire and Ice. It was lovely. Complete with free food, not free beer, flirting waiters, delish meals and way too much laughter. We spoke of the thermostat as though it were a person! And we weren't even intoxicated! We were also shushed by a bitter fellow outside. I may or may not have said something along the lines of 'if his wife were half as loud as we were, he would probably be a happier man'...or something like that. Went home, where more family came into town and we finished up the apartment prep for...
EASTER! Woke up early and went and had coffee with my little sis, Ashley. It is so nice to see her. She moved to Wisconsin in Dec., and this is the farthest we have ever lived apart. She is one of my best friends and it is nice to have her staying with me for most of the week. Lots of sitting on the bed late at night talking about life. ANYWAY, then the madness began. We straightened, mopped, did food prep...the works. Mom came over and real work began. I did not have foil for the ham (who knew you needed foil?), nor did I have enough potatoes...thank God for the Western's Easter hours. Everything was scheduled for 2...so at 1:45 they all started rolling in. We had been counting on those last 15 minutes to get a lot done, so the moment the cars pulled up was a flurry of last minute activity ("Quick, grab my handbag, hide this mirror we never got around to hanging, move the coffee table, Ashley, go stall...er, help them out of their cars!").
The next 4 hours passed in a haze of cooking, talking, playing baseball in the backyard with my 5 year old brother and good memories of Scott. Oh, didn't I mention? To honor Scott and do something that I knew he would love, I invited his paternal Aunt and Uncle and Grandmother. They got along just swimmingly with everyone, and I think everyone fell in love with everyone else. Lots of laughing and politics talk (what is it with people over 65 talking loudly about politics?) and remembering holidays past. Stories were told, glasses were lifted, friends were made. It was a very redemptive meal for me. Here in my apartment, inviting everyone to my table and preparing food. Breaking bread with one another, knowing the sadness that had past and feeling the new life that Easter and Spring bring with them.
The house emptied at 6:45 and I sat down exhausted. Shed some tears over the sadness of doing this by alone and missing Scott. He would have loved it. Every second of it. He would have been in the kitchen, cooking and out back, playing baseball, pouring wine for the older folks and telling stories with Sue Ellen.
At 8:30 I was in bed, asleep by 9:30. Whew.

Easter had new meaning for me this year. Life after death. Celebration after Mourning. Feasting after fasting. Yes.

*pictures to come soon*

Termites and crack...or Elisa's First day of Spring

Yesterday was a good day. Got a ton done at work, although never as much as I hope. My friend let me borrow his car as mine is still in the shop, the sun was shining. Scott's family came for a little visit and brought me the rest of my new bedroom furniture (before and after pics soon), and I planned to have CJ over for a new recipe (a rendition of Urban Standard's Orzo pasta salad) and a beer to celebrate Spring the start of Kitchn: The Cure, which we are both participating it. And, she and I signed up for a veggie CSA with Grow Alabama. All good things to celebrate!

I get home and start to cook. Tender Orzo boiling on the stove, beer freshly opened, when I notice a little bug. I thought "Well, that's what you get when you cook with the door open" and killed it. Then I noticed another...and another. I determined that they were coming from the water heater closet. I opened it up to find TERMITES! EVERYWHERE! There was a crazy swarm of them. I instantly freaked out and started doing an insane "get the hell away from me" dance and armed myself with the only chemical left in my house: bleach. I sprayed them as though they were out to kill, yelling things like I hope this burns your soft, soft underbellies (what!?)and You will not ruin my Easter!!. About this time CJ came in. Witnessing my meltdown, she quickly decided we must go out to eat. On our way to a Mexican joint for Guac, we saw Nabeels...and quickly pulled in.
It was wonderful. We feasted on stuffed grape leaves and feta, Taramasalata dip (the aptly named 'crack' dish of caviar and greek yogurt) and fried potatoes. Accompanied by wine of course. My termite problems were soon forgotten in an hour long conversation about food (seriously, we talked food for an hour). We dissected the flavors and nuances of each item and their pairings and potential. It was refreshing. It was also decided that we now must start a tradition of Greek food on the First Day of Spring. After literally eating the dip with our fingers after running out of crudites, we decided it might be time to go home....to the TERMITES.
they had all perished in a chemical induced frenzy and lay waste on my kitchen floor. A quick run with the vaccuum and the evidence was gone.
This easily could have been my undoing. I am just starting to like the apartment, and this incident could have turned me off of my kitchen and my home completely. But it didn't. I cleaned up, drank and beer and laughed about it. After Ant Wars 2008, termites are a breeze.
When I got to work today and told my 'cellmate' about it, a coworker from a few cubes away piped up "When are you going to call someone about getting your hex removed". I need to get on that...

A visual of the horror:

Soon this will change, just like the seasons

HAPPY SPRING! This year spring means so much to me. Life after death, green after so much brown. Plants springing up, longer days, bike rides. It make me want to get a new green tattoo. I am sure I am going to write more about this later!

Anyone want to buy me a bookstore chain? I promise to give you all the free books and coffee you want.

If interested, see here.

oh yeah, you may have heard of this little chain that is up for sale. Borders.

Weekend round-up

This weekend was more social than most. It felt like my 'coming back into the real world' weekend, which was nice though daunting. Here is the run down:
Friday: work 1/2 day, in jeans. Pissed off at the impending weather doom. After work, made some killer guac. and headed to Susan's house with CJ for some catching up. Laughed so hard that I cried. We joked, mourned, celebrated, ate good food, drank good drinks. It was so refreshing. That is the way I would describe Su...refreshing. I could tell dirty jokes about ex boyfriends and politicians and we would just laugh, laugh, laugh. Loved it.

Saturday: Brunch with friends that was a bit of a friend set up. Walked around Naked Art, admiring the great local art and reminiscing about when it was Zoeys, and VRichards was too small to seat everyone (I miss it). Then I went and illegally printed some Screenplays from a library. I am not going to say much, except that we got busted and I still got the print-outs and saved the day. I am such a bad ass! Like Uma Thurman, without the killing and the Quentin Tarantino dialogue.
Speaking of dialogue, next month starts Script Frenzy, the month long insanity of writing a full length screenplay in 30 days. I participated last year with friends and this year am the leader of the Birmingham Region. It was such a fun event and I highly recommend it to everyone. It is just 30 days of free flowing ideas and typing any bad idea that comes to mind. No editing, just writing. It is a rush and I rediscovered my love of writing from it. I actually went on to enter a contest, which I placed 4th in (a big deal for a beginner). If you are interested, check out the link and get in touch with me. You won't regret it. More posts to come on it. ANYWAY, I also read some scripts this weekend.

Saturday night I went with CJ to the Magic City Art Connection benefit soiree. What a scene. The Birmingham paparazzi was out in full force, as were everyone who wanted to see and be seen. We mingled, had our pictures taken, drank some free beer and hit the road...to the Speakeasy to see Vulture Whale. What a fun band of nice guys who make kick ass music. Check em out. Always enjoy their shows. Also played some rousing games of Foosball, which created a bit of a crowd (people seem to love dressed up girls drinking beer and yelling at the table, not to mention talking complete smack to each other!). Stayed and saw a few songs by Tiger Piss...an, um, interesting band. Got home late, smelling like smoke.
this was a crowd of people that I had not seen in about 2 months, and I was very nervous. It was great. I went with a safe friend, and eased into the social scene. I don't think that I will be back in full force, but occasionally it is nice.

Sunday, I did what is becoming routine. Sleep late, then bike to Starbucks to read and hang out. Got a call that I am getting an antique dresser, chest and new Queen sized bed this week...as a gift! Yea! I am trying to make my apt homey, especially my bedroom...this is going to do wonders for that. Am so very, very excited. A nice end to a nice weekend.
Well, I have another script to read and some dishes to do. This time change thing is messing me up, but I love it! Daylight at 6:35!!
Have a good week.

Weekend round-up

I really enjoy these weekend round ups. They make me slow down and realize why I enjoy weekends. This was the end of Feb and the start of March. In Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady it says
"In February, if thou hearest thunder, thou shalt see a summer wonder".

This summer is going to be pretty wonderful if that is the case.

Back to my weekend:

Friday night, after a long week of moving, having the flu, packing Scott's things, etc...I was ready for a pretty calm night. My friend Carla came over for beer and pesto and we gossiped, talked, ranted about politics and generally had a great time. Later, Carrie and John came over and we did more of the aforementioned talking. Good times.

Saturday I awoke to the sun streaming in my bedroom. Oh Happy Spring Day! Put on jeans and a Tshirt. Went outside, turned around and changed into a skirt. It was starting out wonderfully! I sat outside at Starbucks and enjoyed the sun and cappuccino (I have recently begun a love affair with foam). Afterwards, I went and had a massage by Matthew (at Richard Joseph Salon Spa). I am new to massages, but I can tell you that Matthew is wonderful. I felt better instantly. Relaxed and mellow, I thought I would do some gardening. Thus began Ant Wars 2008. My feet are covered in ant bites, and I have poisoned the ground so that no one in Birmingham should drink the water...but I have no more ants! There was lots of cursing and dancing to get rid of the ants that were climbing my legs and arms...the ground was literally teeming with the bastards when I pulled up a rotten plant. yuck. Plant shopping and bookstore reading followed, as well as my introductions to Flight of the Concords. Anyone seen this? It is funny in a weird way, but i enjoyed it. To bed early. Good day.

Sunday: MORE SUNSHINE! Hopped out of bed, threw on a skirt, shirt and helmet and took off on the cruiser back to Starbucks. My community of friends seem to all congregate there on Sunday mornings, so it was nice and usual and comfortable. Rode home, stopped by the grocery store...I fit 4 bags of groceries in the basket and hanging of the handlebars...very wobbly, scary ride home. In a skirt.
Went to the garden, where I proceeded to spend 2.5 hours pulling weeds, raking, hand tilling, ant annihilating and herb planting. I am sunburned and exhausted. Exactly as I had hoped. Cooked a yummy fresh veggie meal, read some and now am finishing off my Teen Book Sunday read "Kind Dork" (highly recommended). About as good a Sunday as I can ask for right now.

Whew...I need to get to bed early. Keeping my finders cross for an insomnia free night. Those of you with the gift of sleep, say a little thank you tonight to God. those of you who don't ...call me, I am sure I will be up.
If you made it to the end of this insanely detailed post, thanks. Was your weekend good? I hope next weekend is as lovely as this was. And less ant-bitten! To Spring!!! And sleep!

Bonjour!

This is from Stuff white people like (you can find the link on the side of my blog):

But there is a special category of bicycles that appeal far more to white women, the European city bike (pictured). White women have a lot of fantasies about idealized lives, and one of them is living in Europe and riding around an old city on one of these bikes. They dream about waking up and riding to a little cafe, then visiting bakeries and cheese shops and finally riding home to prepare a fancy meal for their friends who will all eat under a canopy with white Christmas lights. This information can be used to help gain the trust/admiration of a white woman, especially if you can pull off a lie about how your mother told you about how she used to do all of these things when she was younger.

And of course, it goes without saying that white people who ride bikes like to talk about how they are saving the earth. If you know a person who rides to work, you should take them aside and say “Hey, thanks. Sincerely, The Earth.” Then give a thumbs up. That white person will ride home on a cloud.

Yep, that first paragraph is me. This is what i dream of, what I want. Guess I am a white person.
And the second paragraph is just hilarious. Especially since I have plans to ride to work in about a month (hills there and back...must train a bit)!

The weather is supposed to be nice this weekend so I am hoping to take a ride, maybe visit the Botanical Gardens, maybe just sleep. I finally got everything moved out of the apartment where Scott was living (Thanks to my Wonderful CG...they packed and moved me and unpacked me and hung drapes and pictures...truly a gift), so this weekend actually feels free. That is nice.

Little Miss Sunshine

That is what I feel like today. Sun is shining, I am wearing a spring dress (ok, I have a long sleeved T underneath and tights, but still...), loud music, sunroof open. I would give anything to be able to take the rest of the day off, get on my bike and just go. Water bottle on board, book in the basket, me and my thoughts and the wind and the sun. Glorious.

Days like today and I am all "What problems? My life is wonderful, perfect, sunny! who wants to plant something and then make pesto and drink mojitos and talk too loudly and laugh too hard and too long?"

ME, that's who.

it even makes me not care that I have 2 huge holes in the toes of my tights.

on a related note, a friend just told me that the State Motto for South Carolina is dum spiro spero, which apparently means "while I breathe, I hope." Isn't that lovely? Can someone steal a State's motto for their own? Well, I just did. Thanks, Trip for the info.
